Mouse The Kestrel. Children’s book aimed at ages 6 +. This Book began during my MA in Authorial Illustration at Falmouth Universtiy, 2021-22. The project spanned four years and was completed in the autumn of 2025.
'Mouse the Kestrel' is a 48 page hand painted children's picture book, starring a Kestrel, set in a woodland. The tale is based loosely on two true events, which happened at a farm and woodland in the Scottish Borders between 2019-2020. The first event was a kestrel who fell from its nest and damaged its wing. The second event happened in the woodland behind the farm, which was due to be cut down when it was saved from destruction by its inhabitants who rescued their home in a remarkable way. Included in the book are themes of; nervousness, friendship, kindness, empathy, comedy, action and eco adventure.
Blurb
‘Many creatures live in the wood on top of the hill,
some are fliers,
some are runners,
some burrowers,
some have bodies,
tough like armour,
some use mud, as a disguise,
some listen with their ears
and watch with their eyes.
Some were easy to scare
and some scared Mouse easily’
A sudden event puts Mouse’s home in danger. Will she fight or take flight?
p.s. it is not advised to approach a badger for flying lessons, this may result in tears on both sides.
Currently stocked at;
Good Press, Glasgow, The Bookshop in Helston and Heron and Willow, Jedburgh
